The creation of the Musée des Sacres in an exceptional setting

As the historic residence of the archbishop of Reims and the place where kings stayed when they were crowned, the Palais du Tau has been the scene of French history. It was in Reims cathedral, adjoining the building, that some thirty sovereigns received the anointment of coronation.

On 30 November 2023, Marie Lavandier, President of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, accompanied by Jocelyn Bouraly, Administrator of the Palais du Tau, and Edward de Lumley, Director of Cultural Development and Audiences, presented the ambitious project to restore this exceptional site and create the Musée des Sacres to representatives of the local community.

To add a dreamlike dimension to the project, the Centre des monuments nationaux has called on contemporary artists. Renowned artists Anne and Patrick Poirier were on hand to unveil sketches of the future stained glass windows that will adorn the Palatine Chapel.

The President also announced the creation of the Cercle des mécènes du Musée des Sacres to bring together companies and individuals wishing to contribute to the restoration of Charles X's sumptuous coronation robe and to the enhancement of the historic heritage of Reims and France.

The reopening of this landmark of French history is scheduled for 2025, the bicentenary of the coronation of Charles X.
